Bird-Works Projects

Portraying the simplest form of birds is what Susan Johnston sets out to do. She studies local birds in Central Florida. To establish the fragile nature of the bird the spaces in the composition are left uncluttered.The bird's form tells all that is needed like a well written sentence that tells it all.

Bay- Works Projects

Bays and Estuaries are near and dear to Susan's heart. She was born and raised a few steps away from the shore of Tampa Bay. Art that conveys this vulnerable habitat is a driving force in her life.

An estuary is a special place because it signifies the communities where fresh water from streams and rivers flow into the mouth of the bay. These communities must have the somewhat salty water created when fresh water and seawater mix. Mangroves, salt marsh, and oyster reefs are the architecture of this environment. Within these communities there is a virtual nursery of newborn creatures. Without this safe haven for young fish and crustaceans the sea would lose its web of life.

It's no wonder that art is the obvious reflection of this world. Form and function unite with expressive line and tone in the creations that pour from Susan's inspired artwork.

Shell-Works Projects

Susan's drawings entertain by staging seashells into surreal still life works of art. It's sometimes just through pen and ink. Other works delve into values of grey through her use of graphite pencil. And some find color within the most surprising places. Balanced compositions rise to the challenge brought on by the complex textures and rhythms that shells provide.

Tree- Works Projects

Rich values of dark and light accentuate the crossing diagonal forms in pine cone and stool. This composition is all about relationships. The growth of a pine tree from the seeds of the pine cone build life. Trees fortify living relationships.

Bench-Works Projects

There are numerous benches scattered across the parks, inviting us to step outside and immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature.These benches provide us with the perfect opportunity to take a break from our hectic lives and appreciate the tranquility that surrounds us. Simply sit back and observe as the birds chirp and the leaves rustle in the wind. These benches are a reminder that sometimes all we need is a moment of stillness. So, let's make the most of them and find solace in the great outdoors.
